EL QUICHE, COTZAL – MAYA IXIL is a single-origin coffee grown by Maya Ixil farmers, members of the Cooperativa Integral de Comercializacíon Maya Ixil, R.L. (MAYA IXIL) located in the community of Santa Avelina, San Juan Cotzal in the Ixil Triangle. MAYA IXIL was established in 1998 with the mission of implementing plans and carrying out local development programs for the trading of organic coffee and natural bee honey, as well as other regional products. MAYA IXIL members belong to the Ixil ethnic group from three El Quiché municipalities: San Juan Cotzal, San Gaspar Chajul, and Santa Maria Nebaj.

MAYA IXIL was established in 1998 with the mission of implementing plans and carrying out local development programs for the trading of organic coffee and natural bee honey, as well as other regional products. MAYA IXIL members belong to the Ixil ethnic group from three El Quiché municipalities: San Juan Cotzal, San Gaspar Chajul, and Santa Maria Nebaj.

Maya IXIL has acquired experience in cultivating organic coffee in the Ixil region and currently has a fully operational wet processing and dry milling installation that allows them to provide a high quality, specialty coffee.

MAYA IXIL’s coffee scores consistently between 87-89 on the SCAA cupping evaluation scale and their coffee is exported to the USA and Europe. Maya IXIL is shade grown, organic, indigenous (Maya Ixil) grown coffee!


The 2017 cupping evaluations are still in process however the most recent crop of EL QUICHE, COTZAL – MAYA IXIL yielded the following cupping results for flavor and aftertaste: Clean, citrus, cherries, blackberries, guava, dark chocolate, cedar with medium body and sparkling acidity.


EL QUICHE, COTZAL – MAYA IXIL coffee was imported through InterAmerican Coffees/Elam Organic Coffees, and sourced through a new friend, Diane Hughes, owner of Earth Friendly Coffee. The coffee is organic certified through the certification office of BCS OKO-GARANTIE GMBH.

    This is a splendid cup of joe from the heart of the Mayan world in Guatemala. The Ixil world has so much unique culture and heritage; one sip of this is a wonderful snapshot of a land of vibrant culture and skilled farmers! I drink a cup of this every chance I get.
